A bit about mAMA
Maria Pia
My mother's name is
mAMA Maria Pia or mAMA Pia,
Aunt Pia or Piotta to the family, or simply Maria Pia.
Her name already
says it all.
She is a one-of-a-kind creature...
Beloved singers:
Eros Ramazzotti and Gianni Morandi.
Favorite ice cream:
Hazelnut and stracciatella.
Favorite dish:
Marinara pizza.
Favorite channel: Rai 1.
She hardly ever misses an episode of the pre-dinner shows.
Unlike me, she's a creature of habit and has her own daily routine.
Changes make her anxious.
She's slim, but a real glutton.
Grandma almost has to lock the fridge and hide sweets under the bed.
She doesn't like drinking water; she prefers Coca-Cola.
She doesn't drink wine or coffee, but barley coffee for breakfast and herbal teas for every occasion.
She doesn't eat salads, but she loves cheese.
Too kind by nature, and deeply caring.
She loves the rosary, the sea, summer hats like an American in Paris, sunglasses, red lipstick, colorful clothes, her perfume,
friends, family, and children.
She never leaves the house without her watch or makeup.
When she was young, she was an artist.
She made copper paintings, painted, crocheted and ironed, loved cooking and studying.
She was shy, reserved, and very polite, but also an ironic and stubborn companion.
She used to never speak; now she does in bursts. I have to stop her—it's the illness.
It had left her like a vegetable in bed, but now she's started living again.
She really enjoys going out, going to parties, but then she has to go back home.
She tried traveling in a converted van and has wanted to hit the road ever since.
The illness hasn't made her nasty; it's made her even more special.
She's a force of nature, she never gives up and
she has a big heart—the biggest of all.

Whose “fije” is she?
Whose daughter is she?
She is grandpa Armando and grandma Rina’s “fije”...
A long time ago, in the countryside of a small village in Abruzzo, grandpa Armando and grandma Rina, after losing two little children, gave birth to a special puppy to ease their great pain.
That’s how my beautiful mommy was born. Life rebels and hits her hard in head, heart and throat. It’s no coincidence.
Put to the test, she gets through it, leaping every obstacle with kindness, faith, strength and courage.
More than once, Death tries to take her away to unknown worlds; with her black cloak she tries to catch her, but I stretch a thin yet sturdy rope that from my heart goes straight to hers.
She grabs it and fights without anger, as if it were nothing. She wants to hold me and this wonderful life again.
She lives with a blessed, nasty illness, the hardest one to accept.
It’s the one no one can see, but it’s there, and inside it makes so much noise that it echoes outside too.
It plays hide-and-seek, never gets caught and never goes away.
It holds your hand forever, keeps you company, and all that’s left is to live with it.
You know, it chooses special people, the ones who never give up, and we won’t either: we’ll fight it arm in arm at any cost, even when it eats up all your strength and knocks you out in bed...
One day I’ll tell you better!
